Sifuna faces fresh hurdle as LINDA party objects name change

The Linda Mwananchi Movement, led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, faces a fresh hurdle in an attempt to reserve its name at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP).

This is after the Liberty National Democratic Alliance (LINDA) filed a formal objection with the Registrar of Political Parties regarding the proposed name change of The Equitable Party (TEP) to the “Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM)”.

TEP was launched on October 4, 2026, as Sifuna was unveiled as the party leader and its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

Shortly afterwards, TEP gazetted a change of name to Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM).

In a letter dated October 13, 2026, Registrar of Political Parties, John Lorionokou, said the office had reviewed the party’s submitted documents supporting the proposed name change and had commenced the gazettement process under Section 20(1)(d) of the Political Parties Act.

However, on October 18, LINDA Founder and Treasurer Purity Ndanu contested the rebranding of TEP.

In a submission to the registrar, LINDA objects to the adoption of the name “Linda Mwananchi Movement” due to two active, unresolved court matters currently pending before the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT).

The party highlights that Case Number PPDTC/E020/2026 and Case Number PPDTA/E001/2026 are still awaiting hearing and determination.

The party argues that any changes to names or identity while these legal matters remain active would be premature and legally contested.
