Kenyan content creators are set for new opportunities after ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, announced it will launch a new creator platform in Kenya.

The announcement was made by ICT and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo on Wednesday, July 15, during a visit to Beijing, China.

According to Kabogo, Volcano Engine, the cloud computing and artificial intelligence arm of ByteDance, has partnered with a local Kenyan firm to launch the new platform.

The platform, called Tazama, will be based in Kenya, giving content creators access to artificial intelligence tools, localisation support, and payment systems to help them monetise their content and reach audiences in China and other international markets.

“The firm and Volcano Engine, ByteDance’s cloud and AI arm (the company behind TikTok), will base the creator platform Tazama here in Kenya, giving our young people the AI tools, localisation support and payment systems to earn from their talent and reach China and other global markets from home,” Kabogo stated.

The CS noted that the initiative is expected to position Kenya as a regional hub for digital content creation while opening opportunities for creators across Africa.

He further explained that the partnership will not only enable Kenyan creators to access China’s digital market of more than one billion users but will also promote African stories, music and creative content to new global audiences.

“It is a genuine cultural exchange. Just as our creators gain access to global platforms, African stories, music and content will reach audiences in China,” Kabogo added.

The platform will support African-language content, beginning with Kiswahili, allowing creators to produce content in local languages while expanding their global reach.

It will also provide new income opportunities to thousands of content creators, especially youth, who have recently shifted to content creation as a source of income.

According to recent data, the digital space is highly commercialised, with total payouts to Kenyan creators surpassing Ksh1 billion.

Besides creating new income opportunities for creators, the government expects the partnership to boost digital tourism by showcasing Kenya’s landscapes, culture, and heritage to audiences worldwide.

The partnership comes as the government steps up efforts to position Kenya as a leading digital and innovation hub in Africa by attracting global technology firms and expanding opportunities for the country’s growing creator economy.
