TSC salary review gives classroom teachers bigger pay rise than principals

Teachers’ salaries under the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) have emerged, revealing that classroom teachers are set to receive bigger pay increases than some principals and school administrators.

The new salary adjustments under the Phase Two CBA show that some classroom-based positions will receive monthly increases of more than Ksh2,000, while several senior management positions will get increases below Ksh1,000.

According to the document, Secondary teachers have emerged as the biggest winners as the new CBA salary matrix shows larger increases for classroom grades than senior administrators.

According to the new details, Secondary Teacher I, or Grade C3, is the biggest beneficiary, with a monthly increase of Ksh2,055, bringing the basic salary from Ksh46,699 to Ksh48,754.

On the other hand, Secondary Teacher II, or Grade C2, will receive a Ksh2,030 increase, with the basic salary rising from Ksh39,070 to Ksh41,100.

In comparison, senior school administrators will receive smaller adjustments than their junior counterparts.

According to the CBA, a principal or deputy principal under Grade D3 will get an increase of only Ksh796, while a senior principal in Grade D4 will receive Ksh887.

A Chief Principal in Grade D5 will also see an increment of Ksh986, moving from Ksh132,365 to Ksh133,351.

The smallest increase in the new matrix goes to Grade D2 officers, comprising Head Teachers and Deputy Principal II, whose salary will rise by Ksh693, from Ksh93,190 to Ksh93,883.

According to sources at the TSC, the revised basic salary rates are expected to be implemented in the July 2026 payroll, with the adjustments taking effect from July 1, 2026.

However, it is important to note that the figures shown are selected salary changes at the entry point or minimum basic salary for each job grade and do not represent the increment for every teacher in that grade.

Teachers on higher salary notches will receive different increments based on the official TSC salary conversion tables.

The development comes days after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) approved a new salary structure for public servants and issued guidelines on the implementation of salary increments under Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).
