TSC sets August 26 deadline for 2026 teacher award nominations

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has opened nominations for the 2026 World Teachers’ Day Awards, with the deadline for submissions set for August 26.

According to the commission’s official guidelines, the awards seek to recognise teachers and institutional administrators who have demonstrated excellence, innovation, leadership and outstanding service in education.

“Nominations will be assessed using standardised evaluation criteria tailored to each award category,” TSC stated.

The award categories include Lifetime Achievement, Early Years Educator, Sustainable Development Educator, Early Career Educator, and School Leadership Excellence awards. 

Other categories are Inclusive Educator, Child Protection Champion, Co-curricular and Talent Development, Teacher Mentor, and Innovation and ICT Integration in Teaching. 

The Commission will also recognise teachers under the Most Resilient Teacher, National Honours, and International Recognition categories. 

Eligibility requirements vary by category, with nominees required to provide evidence showing their contribution, achievements, and measurable impact during the period set for each award category. 

The Commission will assess nominees based on their contribution to teaching and learning, measurable impact, innovation, inclusivity, responsiveness to learner needs, and the potential for their work to be replicated or adopted more widely.

Teachers can nominate themselves, while colleagues and heads of institutions can also submit nominations subject to the stated limits.

Self-nominations are allowed in a maximum of two categories, while peer and institutional nominations can cover up to two teachers. 

Applications will undergo eligibility checks before being assessed by sub-county, county, and regional selection panels using evidence-based criteria. 

The process will identify the top three nominees in each category at sub-county and county levels, while regional panels will select five and forward the best three for national recognition.

The commission has set the nomination deadline for 11pm on August 26, after which the evaluation process will begin, with the final national awardees set to be recognised during the World Teachers’ Day celebrations on October 5.

TSC’s announcement comes months after it invited nominations in May for the inaugural Wajibika Award, which seeks to recognise 300 teachers from across the country, with an update on the awards yet to be issued.
