DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, August 9, 2026, has claimed that two police officers linked to the investigation into the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso were apprehended and later released.
Gachagua made the remarks as he questioned the handling of the investigation into the killing of the mental health researcher, who was shot in Nairobi on July 29, 2026.
He said he later shared the information with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and challenged the agency to disclose what it knew.
“Nikatangaza polisi, na nikamwandikia inbox nikampatia majina ya hao polisi. Nikamwambia ukimaliza taarifa kama hutangazi, mimi nitatangaza,” Gachagua said.
He then claimed that two officers had been apprehended in separate operations but were subsequently released.
“Huyu mmoja anaitwa Inspector Sang, siku ya Thursday alishikwa hapo Thogoto. Murkomen akapiga simu akawachiliwa,” he said.
Gachagua made a similar claim about another officer, saying the individual was apprehended while travelling towards Mombasa.
“Huyu mwingine anaitwa Collins Kiplagat, alishikiwa pale on your way to Mombasa, pale Miasen. Murkomen amepiga simu amewachiliwa,” Gachagua said.
The claims have not been independently established in the information publicly available at the time of publication.
The DCI has separately said investigations into Mutiso’s killing have made significant progress, including the identification of several persons of interest and the recovery of a firearm that investigators said was forensically linked to the killing.
Gachagua also questioned the broader direction of the investigation and called for authorities to provide clear answers about the killing.

His remarks came a day after DCI Director Mohamed Amin publicly asked him to provide investigators with any information he had about the case rather than discussing it publicly.
The DCP leader has maintained that information from security officers informed some of his public statements about the investigation.
The dispute has added a political dimension to the high-profile murder investigation, with Gachagua and the DCI leadership publicly exchanging accusations and demands for information.
The DCI has said investigators are pursuing multiple leads, including possible links between Mutiso’s killing and the 2025 murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
Gachagua, meanwhile, is demanding greater accountability over the investigation and has questioned the handling of police officers he says were linked to the case.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed Gachagua’s account that the two officers he mentioned were apprehended and subsequently released.
