We will shut ODM in Kajiado over party betrayal; Governor Ole Lenku
Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has warned that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) could lose its foothold in Kajiado if the party continues what he described as betrayal of its supporters and attempts to promote candidates outside the party.
Lenku, who is serving his final term as Kajiado governor and has declared his intention to seek the Kajiado Senate seat in the 2027 General Election, spoke on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
He also backed his deputy, Martin Moshisho, to pursue the ODM ticket for governor.
The governor said ODM officials had campaigned for State House Comptroller Katoo Ole Metito, whom he described as a candidate who was not seeking the Kajiado governor’s seat on an ODM ticket.
Lenku said the move had angered ODM supporters in Kajiado, who were waiting for an apology from the party leadership.
“Mimi ni gavana wa ODM. Na naibu yangu Moshisho anatafuta kiti ya gavana na hiyo chama,” Lenku said.
He said he and his supporters wanted ODM acting party leader Oburu Oginga to address the matter and demand an apology from those who campaigned for Metito.
“Bado tunasubiri apology kwamba wale walikosea wamesema pole,” he said.
Lenku also accused unnamed individuals in Kajiado of trying to use money to weaken ODM, warning that the party could lose its support if its leadership allowed such interests to continue.
“Doctor Oburu kuna walafi Kajiado wanafuatafuata pesa za Katoo kuuza chama cha ODM,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing political competition in Kajiado, where several leaders have already shifted political allegiance ahead of the 2027 elections.
On August 10, 2026 former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that 10 Kajiado leaders had joined his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). The defectors included ODM MCAs Isaac Kiresian of Magadi Ward, Joseph Torris of Ewuaso Oonkidongi Ward and Edward Lemomo of Kuku Ward.
Several UDA leaders also moved to DCP, including Titus Matheka of Ongata Rongai and John Maina Mutiga of Nkaimurunya. Nominated MCA Caroline Ndeti moved from Jubilee, while Nais Naisiae Karia, Marush Kisemei and Mbiriri Mwaura also joined Gachagua’s party.
Gachagua said the defections had brought DCP closer to establishing a presence across Kajiado, declaring that “the journey to 100% DCP in Kajiado is almost complete”.
Lenku referred to the defections as he criticised what he called poor political leadership and warned ODM against ignoring the concerns of its supporters.
“ODM, ikiendelea kuruhusu walafi wale wakibizana na pesa za Katoo, ODM itafungwa Kajiado,” Lenku said.
He added that he and other ODM supporters were ready to shut down the party’s operations in Kajiado if what he described as betrayal continued.
“Tuko tayari kufunga, mkiendelea kutusaliti,” he said.
