DCI arrests police officer accused of killing lawyer Kyalo Mbobu last year

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced the arrest of a police officer believed to have fatally shot lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu on September 9, 2025.

In a press statement dated September 24, 2026, DCI revealed that the suspect, identified as police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, was arrested following an intensive investigation over the past year.

Detectives say they recovered the Ceska pistol issued to the suspect at the time of the incident, which, through ballistic examination, was confirmed to be the firearm used to murder the Lawyer.

Detectives also established that one Inspector Kenneth Sang, who is currently at large, coordinated the operation with Rose Mbithe, a suspect already in custody for the murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso in July 2026.

Lawyer Mbobu was shot while driving home from work along Magadi Road, Nairobi.

DCI has expressed its commitment to pursuing all suspects believed to have participated in the murder, regardless of their position or affiliation.

The suspect now remains in custody pending arraignment in court.
