Fire breaks out at Nairobi National Park

A fire has broken out at Nairobi National Park near the Southern Bypass and ICD Road junction, with firefighters responding to the incident.

In a video shared on X by a local station on Saturday, October 17, 2026, smoke and flames were reported in the area as emergency teams moved to contain the fire.

The cause of the fire and the extent of the affected area remain unclear. It was also not immediately established whether any wildlife had been affected.

The incident comes amid public debate over the protection of Nairobi National Park, following concerns about proposals to excise part of the protected area for development.

Firefighters were at the scene responding to the fire, although details on the progress of the operation had not been established.

Nairobi National Park is a protected wildlife area bordering the capital, making fires a concern because of their potential impact on vegetation, wildlife and the surrounding environment.

Further details on the cause of the blaze, the area affected and whether additional response teams had been deployed were not immediately available.

The fire comes months after Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi told the Senate that there were established procedures governing the removal of land from Nairobi National Park.

Speaking before the Senate on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Mbadi addressed concerns surrounding the proposed Bomas project and claims that part of the park was being hived off without due process.

“On the issue of Bomas and the hiving off of Nairobi National Park, there is a procedure for hiving off Nairobi National Park,” he said.

Mbadi added that he was willing to return to the Senate to provide further details on the matter or have the relevant Cabinet Secretaries respond.
