'Mimi staki kuitwa sponsor' - Uhuru to Ruto over Sifuna funding claims
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has dismissed claims that he is sponsoring the opposition after being accused by the government of trying to destabilise President William Ruto’s government.
Speaking in Kitale during the Memorial Service for Kenya’s 8th Vice President, the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Kenyatta reiterated he had no interest in returning to politics after his 10-year tenure as Head of State.
According to the former president, he is not sponsoring opposition to Ruto, stating that it is the people themselves who will decide who to vote for.
“It’s the people who will decide. If they say it is Kalonzo, Ruto, Matiang’i, or Sifuna, it will be so. I don’t want to be called a sponsor; I have just said the power belongs to the people,” Kenyatta stated.
Uhuru urged the public to shun out claims that he is still interested in returning to politics, saying he was content with the time he has served the public.
“People should not say that I am engaging in politics. I don’t have any interest in any seat,” he added.
According to the former Head of State, the person who will lead Kenya in 2027 will be decided by the people, and no one will dictate how Kenyans vote.
“It is time for other people, and Kenyans will decide. Do not agree to be divided,” Kenyatta said, amidst receiving jubilations from the crowd.

His remarks come amid attacks from President William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza allies, who have accused him of funding opposition factions, driving tribal politics, and trying to sabotage the current administration ahead of the 2027 elections.
Ruto has openly blamed his predecessor for sliding into active opposition politics rather than embracing a neutral elder-statesman role.
Addressing a rally in Eldoret on Thursday, August 13, Ruto questioned Uhuru’s legacy regarding the delivery of projects such as affordable housing, universal health coverage, and quality education during his tenure.
“When you look at those people, didn’t their sponsor fail at matters of affordable housing? Now he has gone to organise his proxies, sending people here to come and compete with me,” Ruto said.
However, the fourth president has now put the claims to rest, declaring that he is not interested in the country’s political affairs.
At the same time, the former president also asked the opposition to walk together in their political quest to win in the 2027 elections.
According to the Jubilee party leader, the opposition should walk together in respect towards the general election and come up with a single candidate.
“Everybody can say they want to be president, but God only decides on one. But if they want progress they should look for a way to come together and respect each other,” Kenyatta added.
