Veteran journalist Yvonne Okwara has exited Citizen TV and Royal Media Services after a remarkable eight and a half year stint in her career at the media station.

Okwara announced her exit on Tuesday, October 27, during her final broadcast of The Explainer, an every Tuesday 9 pm bulletin.

Making the announcement, Okwara also said the decision marked her departure from journalism after nearly 20 years at various media outlets in Kenya.

In her farewell message, the veteran journalist thanked viewers and colleagues for the support and opportunities they have given her throughout her career.

“When I walked through these doors, I was young, fresh from university. I still feel the same way. But allow me tonight a little indulgence, because this is my final final word. The very place I started my career in journalism is the same place I get to wrap things up,” Okwara stated.

“So, I am not done building. I’m simply moving to build something else. And to you, I urge: keep asking the right questions, keep demanding better, keep holding power to account, and keep believing that this country is worth fighting for,” she added.

During her time at the RMS-managed TV station, Okwara anchored prime-time bulletins, hosted current affairs programs and covered major political and economic developments.

She has also interviewed Heads of State, including President William Ruto, Cabinet Secretaries, and government and global leaders, including United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guetteress.

Although she did not reveal her next move, Okwara announced that she was preparing for a new chapter in her life.

She joined Citizen TV in May 2018 from KTN News, and has been known for her incisive political interviews and in-depth analysis.

Besides the Explainer, Okwara also, together with a team of journalists at the station, including RMS Editorial Director Linus Kaikai, hosted the News Gang, a program that analysed political news and national events every Thursday.

She has previously worked at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Nation Media Group, and QFM.

Several leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, bid her farewell, wishing her the very best in her next endeavour and describing Okwara as the best at journalism.

“Wishing you all the best in your next chapter. I really loved our little talks on The Explainer. You are one of the best to ever do it. I won’t forget that you gave me my first appearance on TV over 13 years ago. Forever grateful, God bless!,” Sifuna said.
