Senior Citizen TV journalist resigns to pursue politics

Senior Citizen TV journalist John Wanyama has announced his resignation from the Royal Media Services (RMS) to pursue the Malava parliamentary seat.

In a letter, Wanyama, who was based in Eldoret, submitted his resignation on July 3, 2026, giving the company one month’s notice and setting August 4, 2026, as his last working day.

Wanyama said he was leaving his position as a reporter to pursue a political career and contest the Malava parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to resign from my position to pursue a new path in public service by vying for the position of Member of Parliament for Malava Constituency,” Wanyama said in the letter.

While announcing his resignation, Wanyama described the decision as a new chapter in his journey, saying he wanted to serve the community in a different capacity after years of working as a journalist.

The journalist joined RMS in 2013 and built his career for years, covering news in the larger Rift Valley region and was based in Eldoret at the time of his departure.

In his resignation letter, Wanyama expressed gratitude to his colleagues and the management for the support and guidance he received during his time at the media house.

He also thanked the company’s leadership, including RMS owner S.K. Macharia and the company’s Managing Director Wachira Waruru, for what he described as their leadership and mentorship.

“I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition during the notice period and will complete any pending assignments while handing over my responsibilities and all company equipment,” he said.

In response to Wanyama’s letter, RMS formally accepted the resignation in a letter dated July 14, 2026, confirming that his last working day would be August 4.

The company also directed him to complete the staff clearance process, hand over his responsibilities and settle any outstanding liabilities before receiving his terminal dues.

His decision to officially join politics comes as potential candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 polls, with the Malava parliamentary seat already attracting interest from several politicians, including Seth Panyako of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Wanyama joins a growing list of prominent media personalities who have ventured into politics, including Citizen TV’s Trevor Ombija, Stephen Letoo, Willis Raburu and Tina Ogal.
