Detectives in Kiambu have secured seven more days to hold a surgeon accused of murdering his wife in a domestic dispute.

Denis Masoba Nyambane, 36, a surgeon at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital, is accused of stabbing his 30-year-old wife, Mary Mwende Mutie, with a kitchen knife at their rented house in Busacarde Plaza, Kiambu.

Police say Mwende died instantly, leaving behind their three-year-old son, who is now traumatised by the incident.

During a spot check at the apartment, blood stains were found on the staircase, where the deceased is believed to have collapsed while attempting to leave the house after sustaining the stab wounds.

Apartment caretaker Isaac Omare said he was alerted by a neighbour who called for help after Mwende was stabbed. However, by the time he arrived, she had already died, prompting them to alert Kiambu Police Station.

Omare said the family had only lived in the apartment for about two weeks after moving from a nearby residence and had not interacted much with other tenants.

Neighbour Costan Wangui said residents rushed to help but found Mwende lying in a pool of blood with her young son beside her.

Now the suspect will undergo a mental assessment at Kiambu Hospital, while an autopsy will be done at Kenyatta Referral Hospital to establish the cause of death.
