Woman arrested for attempting to smuggle jailbreak tools to suspects

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a stern warning over prison and police cells visits after an alleged attempt to smuggle jailbreak tools.

The warning followed the arrest of an 18-year-old woman who allegedly concealed a pair of pliers and a pair of scissors in a plate of food meant for three suspects held at the Ruai police station.

In a statement on Wednesday, December 16, DCI said the suspect visited the station claiming she wanted to deliver a meal to three friends, who were detained on an anonymous TikTok account that was allegedly used to lure young women into meetings before robbing and sexually assaulting them.

“A prison visit meant to deliver a meal instead blew a plot wide open after sharp-eyed officers at Ruai Police Station unravelled a scheme to hand remanded suspects the very tools of their escape,” DCI stated.

“In an instant, a jailbreak-in-waiting was crushed before it could hatch.

The suspect was placed under immediate arrest, her plate of deception now the centrepiece of a widening investigation into who else may have had a hand in the plot,” it added.

According to the DCI officers, the three suspects had been arrested on September 9 following investigations into a series of alleged attacks targeting young women within the city.

Preliminary investigations established that the suspects allegedly operated an anonymous TikTok page, which they used to initiate contact with unsuspecting women before arranging physical meetings.

Once the women agreed to meet, they were allegedly taken to secluded or abandoned areas where the encounters turned into incidents of sexual violence and robbery.

The victims were allegedly forced to transfer money through accounts controlled by the suspects, while others were allegedly robbed of mobile phones and other valuables.

Following the arrest, the police warned members of the public that aiding or attempting to aid a person to escape from lawful custody constitutes a serious criminal offence.

According to DCI, attempting to help suspects escape from police cells is a criminal offense punishable by law.

The agency warned that individuals found facilitating such attempts would face the full force of the law.

“The DCI reminds members of the public that aiding or attempting to aid an escape from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence and those found committing such acts will be met with the full force of the law,” DCI said.
