I am going to be Kenya’s 6th president; John Mbadi
National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has stepped up his campaign to succeed President William Ruto, saying his close working relationship with the President gives him a better understanding of the country’s direction.
Mbadi said he should become Kenya’s sixth president after Ruto completes his tenure, arguing that he understands the policies and economic reforms being pursued by the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The CS spoke on Sunday, August 23, 2026, during a fellowship and fundraiser at Tonga Parish in Suba South, Homa Bay County.
Mbadi said his ambition to succeed Ruto was not based on guesswork, insisting he knew where the President was taking the country because they had worked closely.
“I am going to be the sixth president of Kenya after President Ruto because I know where Ruto is taking Kenya. We have worked with him very closely. I know the policies. I know the vision he has for this country,” Mbadi said.

He said his experience working with Ruto on economic reforms placed him in a strong position to continue with the President’s agenda after 2032.
“We have worked with him to reform the economy of this country. Once he is done with this term as the President, I am the right person to continue with that legacy, even better it and do even much more,” he said.
The remarks reinforce Mbadi’s earlier declaration that he intends to contest the 2032 presidential election.
In May, the National Treasury CS said he would enter the presidential race once Ruto completes his second term.
“Tukishapatia Ruto term, mimi kama John Mbadi sitaogopa. 2032 ikifika nitakuja kwa uwanja na nitaomba kura; mkikubaliana na mimi, pia nitaongoza nchi,” he said in Kayole.
Mbadi has also linked his presidential ambitions to a wider push for the Nyanza region to produce Ruto’s successor.
In March, he said Nyanza must produce the next president when Ruto leaves office, although he did not name himself at the time.
The latest remarks make his position clearer as politicians begin positioning themselves for the 2032 succession battle.
